nPower - argh!
Someone help me! Despite only being with nPower for about six months I've just got another price rise and had a quick look online at the price comparison services. Unfortunately then I realised that I didn't know how much I was paying at the moment, so I phoned up nPower to find out.
I've successfully gotten two completely different prices from their staff regarding Gas and Electricity but I think that I'm on something called "Sign Online 4" - some of the switching services show this tariff but don't say what the prices are (so I can't compare that with the figures I've been given by nPower to be sure) and some give a list of dates by the various Sign Online tariffs - but the figures don't match what I've been given. This is what I've got from nPower:
Gas
First 4572 units p/a: 3.639p (3.82095p)
Thereafter: 2.047p (2.14935p)
Electricity
I've got three versions, first two from their staff, last one from their website:
First 728 k/w p/a 17.8p (18.69p)
Thereafter 8.24p (8.652p
First 728 k/w p/a 14.88p (15.624p)
Thereafter 7.63p (8.0115p)
First 728 kWh p/a 17.000p (17.85p)
Thereafter 7.690p (8.07p)
I haven't got a clue which is right and just want to get away from them - is anyone else on this "Sign Online 4" tariff and can tell me what they are paying?
Thanks a lot.

Have you got some old bills? Use your historic unit usage and let the comparison site tell you what the cheapest option is. If it says "Sign online 4" with Npower you're fine, if not - switch.0

From the information you have posted the price obtained from the npower website:
First 728 kWh p/a 17.000p (17.85p)
Thereafter 7.690p (8.07p)
This is the Southern Electric area SOL v.6 tariff - you would only be on this if you were just signed up post 25th August. I cannot identify what the other prices are quoted by npower's call centre.
If you are definitely on version 4 (this is now SOL v4.03) then the actual prices you are paying (including VAT) are:
First 728 kWh p/a 20.74
Thereafter 8.97
To carry out a proper comparison enter your kWhs and make sure that you select SOL v.4.03 as the existing tariff as if you enter other details then the result will not be correct.

Hi, I'd like a little bit of advice on this also, basically NPower are shocking and charge the earth (mind you, they arent alone in that) I was wondering how long do you normally have to be with a company before you can switch? i've been with them about 4/5 months and want to change to something that will actually help save me money any help will be grateful0

You are allowed to transfer supplier, at no cost, as often as you wish.
Practically though the supplier you are with is always entitled to a notice period - which for most purposes you can treat as 4 weeks.
Hope this helps.

I swopped to NPower about 6 months ago after using a price comparison webiste. NPower recommended that my monthly direct debit for electricity should be £10. I have just received a letter stating that this needs to be increased to £45. That is a big difference. Are there any cheaper suppliers out there?
Before I was with British Gas and only paid £20 per month, but not sure how recent price increases would have altered this.0 -

I have just moved to npower and will be moving again, after telling me there would be no price hike. Will probably move to Scottish/Manweb in 28 days.

you can change as often as you like, there is no notice period required at all....no waiting period....feel free to do it when you want!!0

from clause 7 of a standard npower contract.
"You must give us 28 days' notice in writing but the contract will not end until another supplier starts to supply the Premises or the supply is cut off because it is no longer required. We may object to a transfer if you owe us money."
You do need watch this - we are often asked by customers about notice periods - most customers believe that there are no notice periods, but I think that without exception you will find that every supplier requires and is entitled to a 28 day notice period - the only ever exceptions are that some suppliers will waive or lessen this period when they advise you of a price increase and also during the period when you are actually joining them.
A number of price comparison services will carry out this notice for you, on your behalf.
Hope that this helps.
