Are there any laws governing book sellers on Amazon?

Put yourself in the seller's shoes. If someone came back to you OVER A MONTH after the sale, would you believe them and offer a refund/exchange?

Let’s be clear here, this was not a cheap book. When buying on Amazon you can buy new or used. Typically used books are cheaper. This book was out of print. Its original price was £40. On Amazon these books sell for twice the price or more.
If my partner went to a used book seller in the high st the description
DUST JACKET VERY GOOD BOOK VERY GOOD/FINE
Would lead one to think it was a complete book. If there were pages missing then the seller would have to point that out. Who would expect to get a book with pages cut out when described above?
But that is only half the problem. For the seller to state
“If I ordered a book for my husband from a second hand dealer (which is what we are) I would inspect the goods the day that they arrived, not 3 - 4 weeks later.” Is very poor. We would never buy from PFCBOOKS again. I have bought many books on Amazon. I have my trusted sellers and will pay more than the cheapest seller because I know I will get the book in the condition they describe. The consumer law states 6 months. Are these sellers on Amazon excused from the law even when they describe themselves as “a second hand dealer”?
If it was a used book seller on the high st then are they are bound by the 6 month rule?
She bought it from a seller on Amazon and trusted that what she received was what she paid for. It was a present for me which is why she did not look at all 300 plus pages.
Either the seller did not check the book thoroughly or they sold it knowing that pages had been cut out.

Did you follow Cyberbob's advice and open an Amazon A to Z claim? If not, do it now, as it's very good advice!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Hello - second hand goods are covered by the sale of goods act. They need to conform to any express description of them also (in this case - very good book, very fine.) I would try bringing this up with the seller, perhaps via the a-z claim as mentioned above. See BIS guidance - page 17/18 - A Trader's guide - The Law Relating to the Supply of Goods and Services. You will need to google it, as I can't post a link.

    Hello
Yes she has taken it up with Amazon as per the advice. So far no response from them. They do state apparently up to 2 weeks to respond.
Thing is, a book does not depreciate. If it had been complete there would be no problem. I’m not going to cut out pages and try to make out it was that way when bought. It would have been a treasured item like my other books. To be read from cover to cover. This one I can’t because it was mutilated. If the seller did not notice this when they bought it, then it is their due diligence which is at fault.
In the way she states that if she bought it for her husband from a second hand dealer she would have checked it, why did she not check it thoroughly and refused it from her seller? If she had checked it from cover to cover she would have noticed it. In which case she was selling something which was not of merchantable quality. Would you buy a book if the seller stated pages cut out?

Thank you Mekmj, I now have the document you mentioned.
  • Has your partner had any response yet from Amazon? Seems to been going on a longtime

Hi, sorry not to get back to you sooner but my wife has been waiting for Amazon to reply as they promised. Today, her patience expired. She rang them. She got a befuddled operator who she finally convinced that she was the account holder who eventually stated that they would need another week to resolve the issue. So, still waiting on Amazon to resolve this issue. We will keep you informed.

Did the buyer check the book on receipt?

Yes, but as she stated, not every page. If I bought a book for my partner, it would not be my thing so I would, up till now, trust the seller to have sold me an entire book. If the seller had checked the book when they bought it to sell on, they should have noticed the pages missing and described it so. Do you agree. They bought it, so they should have checked it and seen there were pages cut out. My partner would not want to but a book with pages missing. Would you?
