Looking for a basic bank account that allows ATM withdrawels overseas

  • I have now retired with a pension and receive a state pension. My husband has not yet reached 65 and will not get either his state pension or his works pension till then. He already received two other occupational pensions. We own a house in Greece and are hopeing to move there this year. At the moment we are happy to have our money sent to our IF Internet account but we are not sure what to do with the money we will have once we have sold or present home. Should we open a basic bank account in England and risk the exchange rate or do we risk going with a Greek bank?

We are going to Tunisia, it is a closed currency so you can only buy Tunisian Dinar when you are in the country plus, as wifie doesn't get paid untill the day after we fly none of that advice is really any use to us, it's not about finding the cheepest rates or best methods to buy foreign money, it's about not being able to use her ATM card because Nationwide have changed the rules, what we want is a basic bank account that does include a cash card that can be used abroad.

get a FairFX card denominated in GBP, that's quite probably your cheapest option, you could possibly exchange notes while in the country at a better rate but do make sure you know the denominations to avoid being shortchanged.

Again, that's not going to be much use to us as we still won't be able to access wifies account whuch is the main point of this thread, she gets paid the day after we fly out meaning that as she has a basic Nationwide account she will not be able draw money that we really could do with, cheapest rates etc are not the issue, what we need is to find a basic account that allows overseas ATM withdrawls.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

A prepaid card would probably be the cheapest to use.

Correct, I know because I have a LTSB basic account as a second account.
Have you thought of opening an Easy saver account and ask for a cashpoint card on it?
As far as I am aware there is no restrictions on the CP card.

Do people not read the opening post? Please, I'm getting fed up of repeating myself, We are not interested in what prepay card is cheapest to use, what we want to do is withdraw from my wifes account whilst we are away, the reason being, she does not get paid until the day after we fly out, so all these suggestions on what pre paid card is best are completely irrellevent.

  • Why cant you get a prepaid card like Fairfx and do the transfer from your wifes account to the card whilst you are away? assuming of course your hotel has free wifi or there is a internet cafe nearby.

I've done this before using a ipod touch rather than take a laptop.

Apologies if your wifes account doesnt have online banking (i dont know much yet about basic accounts).
  • Sorry just seen she doesnt do internet banking.

actually I can see your reasoning, the problem is I wouldn't want to rely on the internet in Tunisia, from personal experience it's not that reliable.
