    What's the history?

How much ram have you got?

How are avast and adaware not working? Any signs of infections?

history? it was working perfectly until about 8pm
ram? 768mb- showing 704 on the device manager

I think ive got it sorted. i re-loaded xp but no difference, so i went the technical route and unplugged everything at the back and rebooted- it seems to be ok. there was something which asked to be loaded on restart, I did not get the name of it, but it started with z~ which of course i declined

now its starting up in about 1 minute again.

Download, install, update and run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes' AntiMalware. When complete, choose 'Remove Selected' if there is anything to remove and Reboot your computer.

After restart, open the program again and go to 'Logs'. Double click on the log produced for today and post the contents here.

Next, download, install and run the HijackThis Version 2.0.3 installer and use the Quick Start guide to enable you to produce a log for posting here too.

will give those programs ago donnie and report back, in the meantime
i have reloaded xp and it seems better but im still having a few minor problems- maybe i have an infected file somewhere:

    1) from start update IE8 takes a long time to start - the computer loads up within 45 seconds- but IE8 takes another 2 minutes to start up- once started it operates fine. mozilla is fine

2)ad-aware update page takes a long time (approx 15mins) to complete- although it scans ok.

    3) i have installed superantispware which scans fine- i have loaded up the "see whats running on your computer" abd it shows nothing untoward

  • just an update- all working well now.

IE8 is working perfectly now- installing the latest java add on has sorted it out.

re ad-aware its taken around 10-15 minutes- so whilst not perfect i can live with that- i dont use it that often anyway- i prefer SAS and spyware blaster.
