First MOT - taking it earlier

Hi,

I have a car that is almost 3 year old and it is due its FIRST MOT in November 2006. Can I take the car in for its first MOT in September 2006?

This is because I will be in the USA for 6mths from October 2006. I cannot ask somebody to take the car in for MOT in November and will be keeping it in storage/lockup when in the US.

Hi,

No problem at all....

Remember to leave the handbrake off when you park it up while you are away!!

If it was me, I would try and let someone use it. It never does cars any good to stand. Even a run once a week will keep it happier.

Can I ask why? I'm learning to drive atm and am finding little things like this very fascinating (and useful, cos I would have kept the handbrake on :eek:)

Why not take it when you get back? I presume you are going to declare it SORN while you are away. You can drive it to a pre-booked MOT without tax even if it is declared SORN so why not deal with it when you get back instead of having it MOT'd weeks early and then having it done again after it has only been on the road for a few months when you get back.

thanks for the reply and entirely good points which I had already considered.

however the time I stated was a maximum of 6 mths but was not too sure how long it the stay will be, it could be 2 mths long or longer upto 6mths.

sorry for the confusion as I just wanted to keep the query as simple as poss.......

The brakes tend to seize up if the handbrake is left on for a long time as the pistons are pushed out of the cylinder and although inside a rubber boot they are then open to corrosion but it doesn't normally happen with the handbrake off as the pistons are fully retracted inside the brake cylinder housing in a coating of brake fluid so don't corrode.

If you are taking the car in for an MOT mention at the time that its coming upto service time and would like to arrange to bring the car in to that particular garage after the MOT a few weeks later. If there are any small issues that may fail the car the garage may overlook minor details on the promise that your car will be going in for a service with him , You can then always cancel the service or fix any problems yourself ....

great thanks for the folks who helped today. I sent out a mail to VOSA who replied as (for those who are interested):

You are able to take your vehicle in for it's first MOT test at any time.
If you do take your vehicle in for a test in September then you will lost the extra time up until November. As long as you are prepared to do this, then taking it in, in September is fine.

you can take your car in one month before MoT is due and if it passes as long as you have last one in they issue you one for 13 months.In your case it would just mean losing that period between sept and nov and then next year your mot would be due sept

Or the V5 if it is the first MOT.

You can have your car MOT'd every week if so wish there is no law that says you cant.....just dont forget to have it done at all.
