One touch dialing with waits and pauses... how to?

Options
I need to type in a phone number and then
i) wait for a prompt before typing in a code (x two)
ii) pause before typing in one digit (x too many)
This drives me crazy and you may be thinking, why not just stop doing it? Oh I intend to, but I have no choice in the matter at the moment. So, while I wait for the system purveyors to join the 21st century, my question to those in the know is this:
How do I set up one touch dialling that enables me to add either simple pauses or pauses awaiting a cue to continue

Used to do that with modem dialup, many moons ago, used something like p then a number say 4, so p4, can you do that?
    Found this,
I found that using commas does work. I used 4 commas to pause between the dial in to MCI and the putting in of my pin and phone number called (which in this case is a dial-up service I use when nothing else is available) and it worked fine. What I forgot to do originally is to put a 1 (for English) in front of the dialing sequence.

By the way, the capital P caused the modem to switch from tone to pulse; it didn't cause a pause in my case.

So what would I need to begin with, would I need to have a dial up modem? (currently on bb)

Other 'systems' I have are a home phone, a softphone (x-lite free version), I have free Skype but would be willing to join the paid up service if it meant I could one touch dial as I (tried to) described above (and can find other ways to use it skype so it's worthwhile)

What kind of device are you dialling from?

Many mobiles support pauses in dialling. On my Samsung for example you hold down * when putting a number into the phone book. It then turns into a "P" which means pause.

From homephone or the softphone, and skype would be an option too as it's an 0800 number I need to dial.

Not on contracts with any mobiles so inclusive minutes etc currently not an option.

Okay, done some googles and found something called Asterisk which is an open source thingamajig.. something tells me my answer could lie in there somewhere so I'm off to digest the jargon.

If someone who is already au fait with Asterisk would kindly let me know, before I plunge into tech studies, if it would work for me in the way I described, I will remember you in my will :D

Asterisk is an open source software phone exchange. Might be a fairly complex solution to a simple problem.

Have you tried seeing if your home phone supports pauses? I've just discovered my home DECT phone does when making an entry in the phone book (even though it doesn't say so in the manual). You hold down the # key and it inserts a pause. It's a Philips SE 435.

:T Brilliant Bonzer, it certainly does..

Only problem is that the length of the pause is 3.6sec and I dont think (or rather cant think) of how to extend it. Still, small problem that, I'll just have to look out for a phone that allows you to get the pauses as long or as short as needed.

    Thanks a lot!!

My Philips phone lets you insert multiple pauses in a row to extend the length i.e. hold down # and get the pause, then hold it down again and get another pause, doubling the length.

I had tried holding the key or pressing it twice but no joy (mine has a 'p' button, and today I finally discovered what it was for :rotfl:)

By the way, does your phone limit the length of the number that can be entered? Mine has a max of 15 digit length number

It limits it to 23 digits on my phone and lets you have multiple pauses.

15 digits doesn't leave much left!
