I use the bog standard Tesco white vinegar in the machine (stays in the cupboard with the other condiments so it's the same bottle that gets used on chips
).

Whilst I am sure this is true, the vast majority of non city dwellers surely do not have a "local Chinese grocery"?Eight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
Use the cheapest vinegar you can find - I was using own brand malt vinegar (the brown sort) until I happened to get some very cheap 5 litre containers of distilled (clear) from Approved Foods (because it's a web based firm it's useful for getting heavy stuff delivered as I don't have a car).
Brown vinegar will not stain your washing.
So that I don't have to measure it each time I mix 1 cup of vinegar with 3 cups of water and 3-5 drops of essential oil in an empty plastic drinks bottle and give it a shake before filling the conditioner tray of my machine.
Using vinegar as a fabric conditioner (works by ensuring all the soap is out of your clothes, same way that vinegar in final rinse works for hair) also ensures that you don't get a build up of limescale in your machine in hard water areas.0 -
I've bunged a bottle of the Tesco Distilled Vinegar 568Ml into my online shop. See how we get on with that before splurging on a big bottle of anything.0

i have a gallon jug of very cheap white pickling vinegar which i found in a greengrocers (something like £1.99? cant remember the actual price but know it was cheap! I pickled a few dozen eggs and countless jars of onions then put it in cupboard and forgot about it! well i found it and there is half a gallon left......no good for pickling as i can see cloudy bits in it! but its great for the washing machine! cleans it nicely and softens the wash! so check the local greengrocers for cheap pickling vinegar.0
