I had the same problem recently and had to go with BT.
If this is a new house or noone has had a telephone in the house before then you have to join BT. BT owns the telephone lines and other telephone providers like talktalk can only offer a deal once you have been connected to BT and paid BT the £125 connection fee.
BT say that it costs them over £125 to put the telephone line into ur house so they have to gain some money back.
Once you get connected to BT you can change to another telephone provider. I think once you are connected you are on a contract with BT for 1 year but you can pay to get out of the BT contract and then join another telephone provider.0 -
If you know someone who works for BT then they might be able to do something as we were offered this once.
You could also see if NTL are in your area. If so they used to do a referral scheme so if a friend refers you, you could both get something free. BTW - if you do go with NTL, check out their website for different package offers & look elsewhere on this site to see what deals other people have gotten out of them!0 -

The BT Home Connection Fee thread is here:http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=211879&page=9
Make sure you cut the cost of your calls even if your line is with BT.
