Dry rot - not found in full survey

We moved into our house 11 months ago. The house is an old and 'complicated' house with parts of it dating from 18th century and with various additions added later. Before removing the dry lining the householder is supposed to be aware of the dry rot the professional surveyor may have missed, if there is to be any hope of redress from the original surveyor?
