I have been asked to send a P45 and any P60's to the taxman to sort out a tax for year 09/10
However - I only have a single P45 lef (Employee Copy) left - the other two went to DWP at various times in the last few months, (to obtain my correct benefits) and I am obviously reluctant to send my only remaining P45 to them - They will, no doubt lose it and won't return it to me in any case - any suggestions ?

Since you have a P45 for the 09/10 tax year I assume you left your job during that year so bar being kept for your records there is no other use for it from now on. That tax year is ended so you can't hand it in to any new employer in this or any future tax year.
If you left the job during 09/10 and handed parts 2 and 3 of your P45 to DWP and were still claiming benefits at the end of the tax year you should have received a P60U from DWP showing all the taxable benefit you received in 09/10. Send that to HMRC along with a copy of your P45 part 1 in order to get your refund claim processed. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
