explain what you are trying to do, and why?

you would look at the back of the machine, (or possibly the side if it's a laptop)

I am trying to set up my Virgin Media wireless router. I can use the internet while the ethernet is plugged in though the ethernet port is dodgy.

When I try to go through the install process, I get halfway through and then it send be back to the beginning again.

I thought it might be because I am using the dodgy port... though I don't think so as I can access the internet through it.

Anyway I thought that if I could use my USB port then I could definitely rule that out.

It is a laptop that I am using...

If the laptop is wireless, then you can use wireless.

What makes you think the ethernet port is dodgy

You don't have to install anything to setup a wireless router, just go to the admin screen in your browser.

Are you currently accessing the internet via the wireless router, or direct to a modem?

    Directly with the modem.

The guy who installed Virgin Media said that I had to use the CD that came with the router to get it configured...

My USB port is loose and the little light isn't flashing, though it is letting me connect.

There is a whole lot of wrong about a router which requires a CD to configure it. Normally, you set the router to factory defaults, switch it on connect your computer, turn that on and browse to the default IP address with Firefox or another browser, logon to the router with the default ID and password and configure.

I have reset it to it's factory settings, just in case. I went to the IP address that it said to in the instructions and filled it all in. Then disconnected the ethernet cable and nothing happened.

    i'll try again.

You have an ethernet port on the laptop?

If so, plug laptop ethernet to router (one of the 4 ports), router wan port to modem with ethernet cable, forget the usb adapter it's complicating the issue

If you've reset the router to defaults, you'll have to setup wireless encryption again on the router, and the laptop
