With summer holidays upon us, and kids wanting to keep in touch with friends I would like to add my kids as users onto my laptop, I know I can add new users via the control panel, but how can I be sure that they do not have access to my profiles, bookmarks and files. It's a Dell Inspiron Mini, running on XP.

if you go into your account you can make your account private, this is prevent access to all other users, unless they have your password.
you can also make them standard users, instead of admin, this way your laptop wont get cluttered with games and other gubbins kids usually install lol0 -
Each user will have to have a password set on their account to start with.
When you create the accounts, the "wizard" will ask you if you want to make the new users "Administrators" or "Users" - select the latter.
During the setup, the "wizard" will also ask if user files should be made "Private" - select yes.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
but that wont protect the user that already exists (unless they were set up with privacy turned on) and if the machine was created with only one user, then its likely privacy will not be turned on... im sure theres an option to make files private or something along those lines, just a case of going into your user and looking through the options.0

You said you know how to set up through Control Panel, so have a look though the options presented when you set up the new users?
As you are the administrator, there is an option to make your files private when you add a user.
Also as before, DO NOT give them a full account.Move along, nothing to see.0
