Hello
We have a cast iron fireplace which we would like to install but it has been left outside recently and developed some surface rust.
Is it possible to clean this up without it recurring and can it be done by ourselves or shoudl it be done commercially by a dipping process?
Thanks

No need to dip. Remove all loose rust with a wire brush. Then rub the whole thing with wire wool.
Then apply a grate polish, which you can get from firms selling fireplaces or a very good paint supplier. Look for Liberon, Stovax or Zebo brands.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

I want to restor my grate also. The difference is that I don't intend to use it again. To save money, can I use black shoe polish?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
