Vauxhall Astra AUX port not working properly

I've got the tomtom car kit for my iphone 3gs which i'm trying to connect thru the Aux port into my vauxhall astra Aux port the sound is not coming through clearly and sometimes it will play thru 1 speaker and not the other and other times it wont play thru either.

When I plug this directly into the iphone the music plays clearly thru both speakers.

I've had the tomtom car kit changed for a new one, i've had the car aux port checked and also i've tried about 3 different 3.5mm leads and still the same problem.

Can someone please help me with this bcoz am totally lost and dont know what to try next to get this to work properly.

Thanks

    Hi mate

Sounds to me like you have a dodgy connection somewhere.

    How old is the car?
If it is fairly old its likely the port has rarely been used and the contacts are dirty.
You could try a tiny amount of WD40 in the plug socket.

Failing that might well be a bad connection of one of the wires connecting the speakers etc up.

I'd go with the socket first as will be the easiest thing to try first :)

By the way, if the socket doesn't clear it, then it may well be its a dodgy speaker and/or wire feeding it.

I can assure you it won't be anything major, as speakers are not computer (brains) controlled.

I am sure someone with more advice will be along shortly :)

when i don't have the 3.5mm jack plug pushed in properly into both my iphone and ipod the sound only comes through one speaker in my van. make sure the plug is properly in.

    Thanks for ur help guys.

My astra is fairly new car a 08 plate.

I have pushed the lead in as far as it will go into the socket in the carkit and the car aux port.

If I apply WD40 into it will it not damage the socket?

Sorry to sound stupid but what exactly does WD40 do?

If there is a bad contact with the plug and socket, then you will get a faulty connection resulting sometimes in poor sounds etc, WD40 would help clean the connection allowing a better contact IF it is that causing the problem.

However, as you have said your car is a 08 plate this is something only you can try as I wouldn't have thought a two year old car wouldn't have a poor connection socket at this early in it's life.

If WD40 doesn't sort it, you might just need to look into the wiring, it will be very simple, just twin cable and the plugs connecting everything up.

As the car is 08, is their any warranty remaining on the car?
I am not that up on warranty issues but I would look into this.

It simply can't be anything big, it has to be the connection between it all.

If all else fails, take the car back to the dealer, it is still under warranty.;)

Dodgy lead into the satnav, Which probably is not stereo sound?
Hence the sound through one speaker, Got the right cable?

    Should convert mono to stereo.

Its got warranty on it till march next year I took it down to vauxhall last thursday because I needed a few other things checking. They just told me that bcoz the aux socket is working perfectly when the lead is connected directly into the iphone that there is not a problem with it. and told me to get the tomtom car kit checked out instead but i've already had this replaced for a new one.

I know that it may sound unlikely but it could be another faulty TomTom.

Did you see them switch them?
Because some places will try it on with you.

If all else fails I would request a refund and try going to a place that will fit it for you, if you buy it from them there should be a huge reduction in fitting fee.

Other than this OP, I am sorry but I am lost here on, as you say the socket is working but not when the TomTom is connected, and you have had it swapped already.

My bet would be they have 'said' they changed it but haven't, go back again :)

WD40 will NOT help to clean a minjack socket. Don't use it.

If the iPod works correctly with the socket, then the problem clearly rests with the plug/cable on the TomTom. My guess is that the OP is not using the correct minjack.
