Poor Call Quality on Skype/Google Talk

I get poor call quality on Skype & Google Talk after about 4 mins of conversation.
The voice sounds like a robot, goes off and comes back or is very delayed.
Is there anything I can do, any settings I can move to stop this?
I run a P4 Dell laptop with 256Mb of memory.

my guess is that this is due to delays on the net, and you can't do much about that.
