please help insuring car abroad

Please help,

We are borrowing car off my mother in law for trip to france , her car insurance have just said they cant insure me .

Any ideas of cheapest places to get short term cover , without that we will have to fly and hire a car ?

We've just come back from the south of france with friends who borrowed her brothers car. They just got added on to the owners insurance as named drivers and so maintained the comprehensive cover.

I am looking for a similar thing - we are house sitting in France and I want to comprehensively insure my friend's car which they will leave behind - but without it affecting their policy - for 3 weeks. Anyone know of any 3rd party short term insurance for someone else's car in a foreign country?

As the car is based in France I assume it has french plates (you can only keep a car with english plates a limited time). If that is the case I think you will need to use an french insurance company. However I though in France/Spain etc you insured the car not the driver.
