You can sometimes get them off if you grab them firmly and give them a good wiggle. Or you could try, with a great deal of care, prying it off with a screwdriver. The best do though TBH is probably buy the proper tool for the job, a wiper arm puller like http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Window-Wiper-Arm-Puller-Pro-Quality-Trident-T313100-/320562484852?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4aa3035674 they grip the back of the wiper arm while pushing against the securing bolt in the middle.0

First, pull the wiper up so that its at 90 degrees to the window (this removes the pressure) then carefully/gently wiggle the part still parallel with the window till it comes off.
When you say the bracket's broken, do you mean the little plastic part that secures the wiper assembly to the wiper arm?0 -
Many thanks for the replies, I was not sure if it was screwed on or just slid on. The bit that has broken attaches the motor to the back door so getting the arm assembly off is just the start of the job.0
