    Another question...

In the Network Type should I choose computer to computer (Ad Hoc) instead of Access point (infrastructure) ? :o

  • Which card is it?

There should be something obvious in the netgear screens to disable it and use windows to manage instead.

I have changed it again to the Microsoft management. and chosen my network. I have entered the passkey and again to confirm. But it just keeps searching. The Wireless Network Connection says connected, signal strength Excellent, Status : aquiring network address.
It flicks between this and Not connected.
Had to un check the 'use microsoft' box in properties to get my connection back.

  • If you search the hard disk for wg111 then you should find an uninstall shortcut and a wizard shortcut.

If you uninstall it, then reinstall, the wizard should then run, it will ask you your region (europe), then whether you want to use it's software or microsoft's to manage, if you choose microsoft, it will still give you the red wireless laptop icon, but when you click on it, there will be fewer screen - just enough to enable you to monitor the signal strength, but none for putting in wpa keys etc..

Then provided you get the ssid correct, and the encryption key, you should be able to follow my earlier instructions, if you are using the long 63 character key, then use copy and paste to transfer it from the router to the laptop. If you are using a shorter one that you have typed in, be aware that could probably be cracked.. especially if you use dictionary words.. the strength is in the length, and the randomness.

The easiest way is to go to https://www.grc.com/passwords copy the 63 character random key to the clipboard, and paste that into the router config with a wired connection, apply, then paste it into the wireless config on the laptop/pc.

when you generate the key make sure there are no "' in it, if so do a refresh to generate another, the router doesn't like quotes in the key.

I know this all seems a pain, but once it's done, it's done and you can forget about it, and be confident that you probably have the most secure router in the street.

Sorry I didn't get back to you last night. I done something and I couldn't even connect at all ! It turns out I somehow uninstalled the ethernet adaptor from my PC. So I couldn't connect either way.
At the moment I have again WEP set up. I'll have a go at getting it all right this time.
