Phone line and broadband

Moved into a rented property about 14 months ago.
As I had a mobile phone for calls I never bothered with a landline. I am now considering getting broadband (for ps3 gaming and the internet) and the necessary evil of a phone line. And am unsure best way of going about it.
I am unsure who supplied the line previously, but keep receiving come back to BT letters so assuming previous tenant was with BT and cancelled before they left.
Been on BT website which claims my address needs a new line costing nearly £130, on Virgin website it said it just needed reactivating for £40. I have also tried Plusnet who would want £50 to supply a new line. been on Orange website but you need your phone number.
Is there anyway of reconnecting the line for cheaper or for free?, I already have phone sockets around the house.
If not as anyone been in a similar position and what did they do to remedy it?:money:

Is there a dial tone? If so, dial 17070 to find out the number.
BT is the only firm which will ever reconnect for free but that normally involves taking over a line the previous occupant was using until a few weeks or months before. Worth asking though if you can find out the number.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
