I had one of these. "Sir, you have a virus on your computer and its been sending error messages to Microsoft. We're logged on now."

Me: "Thats clever, I use a Mac. How does that work then?"

And then ensued much hilarity at my end as the moron obviously continued to read from the script he'd been given.

My dad got a call from them and knew about the scam already so acted dumb and was calling wi fi an internet connection with no wires and what a malware was etc. Thing is they use VOIP so keeping them on the phone for ages costs them almost nothing.

My mum had been receiving calls something like this for a while. The nice foreign sounding chap insisted she had problems and told her “I know you are by the computer now and even though you say it is powered down, I can sense it has serious problems” I guess he must have been a Jedi Master or something.

I happened to be visiting mum last week when they called again. I had nothing else to do, so I kept him on the phone for ages acting like a total lamer, saying things like “Oh I’m so glad you called please help me, I am scared of viruses :rotfl:”

Like above he wanted me to send him a remote invite, but as I was acting so thick not following his instructions ( took 10mins to turn the computer on). He almost gave up, asking me if there was anyone else in the house who knew how to use a computer lol

Now the best bit was when I said the computer had come on and he went through the procedures to send the invite. I told him nothing was making any sense as my computer didn’t have the things he was going on about. He asked me what I could see on the screen, so I gave him a detailed description of everything including the wallpaper which was brown with a great big Ubuntu logo on it.

When he finally figured out my imaginary computer was running linux he told me that “Ubuntu is very dangerous and some computer have been known to blowup and cause houses to burn down:eek::rotfl:” and I should get someone to put windows on my computer so he could help me in the future, and hung up.

Lovely! It makes Ubuntu sound like the big bad wolf who will "huff and he'll puff and will blow your house down". :D

They're quite persistent aren't they? I've had a couple of calls in last 2 weeks. Surely it must work for them...ie some people buy their software over the phone (the idiots). And no I wasn't one of them :)

I never get these calls maybe because I'm ex-directory.

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

More than likely you're either a) not subscribing to a service where some 'insider' has managed to get hold of the customer list. Or b) you've not subscribed for some service where they've requested your email address or ticked a box for 'Do you have a computer at home?' more than likely a computer magazine subscription or a competition to win 12 months supply of cat food or a Credit Card or whatever.

Either way, the information will be processed abroad and someone will have passed it on. The people getting 'stung' are the ones who are pretty much bringing it on themselves. Afterall, those of us who are like you said 'ex-directory' or a little more cautious, we don't get the calls do we? Well like you I am and haven't either.
