SP Online energy saver 6 - extension
Email from SP asking if I want to extend my current plan, should I extend it? are there much better deals out there, which way are prices going over the next 12 months up or down?
Grateful for any ideas. We hope you've enjoyed being a ScottishPower online customer.
Your current Online Energy Saver 6 Offer2 is due to end on 31st July 2010, but we want you to carry on saving money3. That's why we're offering to extend it for another year4, which could mean an average annual saving of £66(1) when compared with our current standard monthly Direct Debit prices, helping you pay less for your energy.

Has anyone done any research as to whether this deal is any good?

There are loads of SP tariffs there is an Online energy saver 8 so I would check it on Energyhelpline, uswitch, etc based on your usage over the last 12 months
It might be that they have a more suitable tariff or that there are other companies offering a better deal.
I am getting results showing cheaper rates than Scottish Power for economy 7 online billed and DD from:
British Gas (for existing customers only )
Npower
EDF and Sainsburys badged EDF
Then there is cashback on top of course.
You need to look at each deal closely to see it matches your needs:
eg if you have a nectar card then you get nectar points with the EDF and Sainsbury offer.
Then there is service, cancellation fees and whether to go for fixed or non fixed to think about0 -

I did look at uSwitch and noticed a capped deal that was more expensive and online energy 10 that shows cheaper but looks like a similar tariff. Does anyone have any views on prices are they heading up or down?'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. I have also had this email.
I have done several price comparisons and all of them have shown the Online Energy Saver 10 as the best option with the highest saving but the question is what is this being compared to?
The Energy Saver 10 tariff guarantees prices will always be a minimum of 2% below the Standard Direct Debit tariff BUT the Energy Saver 6 Tariff guarantees prices will be a minimum of 3% below the Standard Direct Debit tariff and on this basis the Energy Saver 6 SHOULD be cheaper than the Energy Saver 10
When I am signed in to my account on-line, I can't find any details regarding the Saver 10 Tariff and only get details of the Saver 6 Tariff but when I am not signed in, the web site only seems to give details of the Saver 10 Tariff and nothing for the Saver 6.
So, is the Saver 6 offer only available to existing Saver 6 customers and better than the Saver 10 Tariff and are the comparison sites not including the Saver 6 prices in their calculations?
It looks to me as if, if you are currently on the Saver 6 and want to stay on this type of discounted tariff, then it would be best to accept the offer and the big question is would it be better to go for a fixed tariff.
The current SP fixed tariff seems to have charges some 30% higher than the Saver 10 according to the comparison sites and are fixed for (nearly) 2 years. (The Saver 6 offer ends 31/07/2011)
So, you have to guess what options will be available from 01/08/2011 and how much prices will increase in excess of 30% over the next 2 years. Who knows?
The more I read the more confused I get but I think I will stick with the Saver 6 (and get the free energy monitor) and hope that prices don't rise too far too quickly. I usually get it wrong!0 -
Bob, I am with you on this. I think I will take the line of least resistance and just accept the new deal. I have been more than happy with Scottish Power for the last couple of years. Better the devil you know and all that!0

I have also had this email and based on last years consumption Npower is working out cheaper (about £100) for me than staying with SP.0

I've had the same and i think i will stay with SP online saver 6... i've done several comparaison sites and even directly to few suppliers but the difference is quite low about £30-£50 per year... and as I've been happy with SP and found their online system easy and convenient I don't think it's worth the hassle of switching and making sure it's all going thru ok....Npower does come cheaper but i've had bad experience with them and will not go back!!! Good luck as it is quite confusing with all the different options...A friend is a present which you give yourself (R.Stevenson)

I found this online energy saver 10 tariff would be better for me. I also could not find it online so I phoned SP and told them to switch me to this plan. They computed that my monthly payment would go down by £15 p.m. I get an estimated annual saving of £165 and no switching supplier hassle. I wonder why SP are not pushing this plan. I bet is too many people sign up they will withdraw this plan.I've had the same and i think i will stay with SP online saver 6... i've done several comparaison sites and even directly to few suppliers but the difference is quite low about £30-£50 per year... and as I've been happy with SP and found their online system easy and convenient I don't think it's worth the hassle of switching and making sure it's all going thru ok....Npower does come cheaper but i've had bad experience with them and will not go back!!! Online energy 10 came out in the results for me but I still had a better saving with npower (about £80 more a year) otherwise I would have switched to online energy 10.0

The main problem comparing between the two tariffs is that the change over point between the higher and lower unit price is different. With electricity it is still the first 225kWh per quarter for both tariffs so it is easy to compare. However, with gas the cutover is 670kWh per quarter for OLES 10 and 1143kWh per quarter for OLES 6. Also the unit rate is different. Unless you are quite good with spreadsheets and can input your consumption quarter by quarter, you can not get an accurate idea whether OLES 10 will be better for you. It seems to be better if you use a lot of gas.0
