Spring Onion tops - do you use them and what for?

Options
I made a salad today and chopped off the leafy tops of the onions. I then wondered if any of you use them in stews or casseroles etc, or are they tough?

I'd be interested in this too.... How about seasoning a chicken soup as that gets boiled for quite a while anyway and then blended.

Other than that mone go on the compost heap

I got one 2 years ago Larmy, one of those black plastic bin type things that the council were giving away free

Anyway I stuffed it full of grass and veggie cuttings and stuff and threw some of that quicko compost stuff on it and forgot about it - well truth be told a tree kinda grew over it..........

Anyhoo, I am too scared now to lift the lid in case it is full of critters! Me and gardening don't get on too well - and me and critters get on even worse! :D

  • eat them like the rest of the spring onion. it's milder like chives. just trim the top + bottom and discard and chop / slice the rest as normal. i use it all in salads, chicken fried rice, in sandwiches, with cheese on toast.

Hmm, love them chopped up in scrambled eggs. Or, yum, sliced tomatoes, chopped green stuff, salt and pepper. Eat on it's own on place on top of ham sandwich.
That's Poland for you. I had never even seen chives when I was growing up. And our green stuff came off the top of big onions. If you like, I have a bunch of spring onion bulbs, swap you for the green bits.
    Do they have a name?
    :wall:
  • in scotland we call spring onions 'cibies'

Use spring onion tops like chives, or add to a stir fry, or soup, or scrambled eggs, or stew, or casserole...... is that enough to be going on with?
It seems a pity to compost them with all those uses... especially if it turns into a tree full of critters.......

We eat all of the spring onion in salad.....I thought everyone did. In Northern Ireland we call them scallions.

  • I use all of the spring onion too and the green tops are the best bit! Especially nice in potato salad and champ, of course.

  • I use the white part for salad and keep the leafy part for chopping up like chives and putting in with whatever really.... I have heard that in other countries they do the opposite to what a lot of us do, and the eat the leafy part and throw away the other bit! ..don't know if this is true though!! :)
