My carpet needs cleaning

Options
It's stained with animal stuff, some of it quite a few months old..

I puppy-sat for a week and was assured he was house-trained. Not. My cat has been sick a few times in the hot weather. I've tried the usual products such as Vanish, 1001 and even washing up liquid, so-called pet stain remover from pet shops etc but no go.

So I'm torn between getting a Vax type shampoo-er and getting someone in. I've got business cards from 2 local businesses, one being the traditional water based cleaning and the other being a dry cleanse (I've no idea how this works.

Help or recommendations for any of these three options would be welcome please.

Thanks as always :T

Linda

As a cheaper option to try first, you can hire a Rug Doctor carpet cleaner and shampoo from Homebase. Hire for 24 hours is about £13 last time I got one, the shampoo is about a tenner.

These work brilliantly, and you get attachments with them to do furniture and upholstery and well. I've used them lots of times in different houses - one with an 'animal-stained carpet' - and had great results. It takes about 4 hours to do a whole 3 bedroomed house, and the muck they get out is amazing. They also don't leave the carpet very damp at all. Might be worth a try first?

I'd do a spot test first though, just to check it will remove the stains you want it to.

I'd also recommend a Rug Doctor. Most DIY stores rent them out. I try to do my carpets about once a year. The muck they extract is frightening.

Really dirty carpets may need two goings over so if you get the rug doctor on an afternoon you can use it once immediately, allow the carpets to dry overnight then do the cleaning again in the morning.

I like Rug Doctor too. I paid someone once to come and do the house and it was no different to the rug doctor but it cost me a lot of money!

Thanks everyone, looks like the Rug Doctor is the way to go :T. I seem to remember seeing their ad in B&Q a while back.

One more question - are they really hard work, do they have a small cleaning head ?

    Hi everyone

I've got a really mucky 100% wool carpet that I haven't had cleaned because I'm worried about it shrinking - what does everyone else do - is Rug Doctor of for this type of carpet?

    Thanks

Hi Gizmo's mum, good question !

i'm the same, my carpet is wool but I forgot to mention that in my original post

Let's hope someone can help, I'm ashamed of my carpet - that will teach me to buy pale green (no kids but one usually very clean cat).
