Yep - just like loads of people have widescreen TVs but no means of receiving widescreen broadcasts (or even worse they do but haven't set it up correctly ).

There's loads of ws broadcast these days watching it is not difficult.
There is a moral to the story - if you don't understand the new technology you're buying, you almost certainly don't need it.
I disagree, you can be a film fan and want the best picture quality, but that doesn't mean you have to know how the technology behind it works.

Still no one has answered if a dvd recorder could record a HD TV signal and play it back. and what effect does this have on record times, does the recorder adjust the record times? but how does it know it is an HD signal or not?

Yes but if you don't understand the technology then you might buy something you don't need or isn't compatible etc.

You can get upscaling dvd players that will output 720p and possibly 1080p/i

So are you saying a normal dvd recorder will not record an HD signal? Are you also saying a normal dvd player will not play an HD recorded program on a dvd?

In answer to your questions No (it will record it but it will downscale it) No and No.

Iam also in the industry and the company I work for broadcasts BBC HD and ITV HD plus maybe around 20 -30 other programmes and films.

HD DVD players and software are available to buy from the states. They are due to be released within the next couple of weeks.

Any more questions please ask as I am sure I can help

You can get HD broadcast in States and there far more mature market than we have in UK.

I know BBC record quiet a bit of HD and then its downsampled for broadcast on SD, Planet Earth was fantastic even in SD quality

    Thanks Yelac

So the only ways for me to view HD on my TV tommorow would be

    1. Buy a Sky box capable of recieving the BBC HD channel (as my current box is an old one)

    2. buy a dvd player capable of outputting an HD signal,.... just having a dvd with a HD programme on is not good enough, you also have to have a dvd player capable of outputting the signal, and this may entail entering the system settings and changing it.

    3. If the TV has hdmi input connect it to a PC directly and play an mpeg 4 file....Would any mpeg 4 file do or does ot have to be a HD mpeg 4 file?

4.....How about a freeview box should all freeview boxes be capable of recieving an HD signal? Or are most of them unable to do it. So when buying a freeview box people should check if it is HD ready..?

    5. Where a TV is HD ready & has built in freeview, presumably the built in freeview is going to also be HD ready.

HD on freeview is going to use up a lot of bandwith, so you will have to lose some channels or they will all have to be compressed to hell.

Proms in the Park was shot in HD as is Later with Jools
The Proms programme is sold onto Japan who are streets ahead of anything we have in HD terms and Later with Jools is flogged to the USA.

Most programmes nowadays have to be made HD if they want an international market.

However being able to watch them in this country is still a big issue.
    It will come - eventually.
We all evolve - get on with it

Yes or subscribe to Telewest (the company I work for)If you live in a Telewest area

    Yes

Its not quite as easy as that, never seen a HDMI socket on any PC grahics cards, would have to be DVI socket

Freeview HD is currently on trial off Crystal palace transmitter, I doubt current boxes will be compatible

    wouldn't of thought so

    Yes

    Hmm, not quite that simple.

What was mentioned earlier were upsampling DVD players. These play standard DVDs but use some processing to bring the picture up to HD, even though the original source isn't actually HD. It's like making a digital photo bigger, it doesn't magically gain quality.

Also, you won't get any HD content on a DVD afaik. It will just downscale it to SD for you, which your upscaling DVD player will then upscale. Sadly not bringing you HD.

    The other options work tho.
