Hi
I hope someone could give me some advice
My brother-in law is planning on buying a house with his partner, she has sold her house already but he is finding it difficult to sell his house, they are still going to buy a new house whilst waiting for his to sell, does anyone know if he will still have to pay council tax on this house even if they are not living in it?
thanks

no is the short answer, request EPR (empty property releif) and they won't have to pay council tax, BUT as this property will officially be empty many standard house insurance policy's will become invalid. It might be better value to say one of them is living in it, so the'll each pay 75% council tax on each property (getting 25% discount for living alone) but won't have the increased 'empty property' home insurance to worry about.Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.0 -
Councils set their own rules on this. Also if they do let you pay less for not living there the place has to be empty i.e. no furniture. Best thing to do is ask the Council what their policy is.0

there is usually a time limit of empty property discount - often 6 months.0

Different councils have different rules. Some coucils allow a six month exemption every time the property is empty and unfurnished, some only allow one six month period during the life of the property.0

If it is empty, you might not need to pay water rates either. I know this is the case with Yorkshire Water.0
