Recommendation for a wireless router?

My son just bought an XBox 360 and has connected it to our wireless router via a cable, we also 4 laptops that connect wirelessly to our network and boy is it now groaning under the strain. Our connection is 20mb with Virgin so it shouldn't really be noticeably slow, but it is.

So im thinking I need a better router, does anyone have any recommendations please.

Your router isn't the problem. You need to do speed checks with only one device on at times when its slow. Its more likely to be network congestion at Virgin in peak times. With 20Mbit broadband, the average 54g wifi router isn't even running at 50% capacity.

the other issue is that you're unlilkely to be getting the 20Mbps that Virgin advertise.
The pseed will be "up to" 20Mbps. So unless you're living in the same street as the exchange you're more likely to be getting a slower speed, even with a great connection and no congestion.

And there was me thinking this would be simple to sort out.

We are actually only 2 streets away from the exchange and until the Xbox was connected, speed wasn't an issue at all.

i'm affraid its virgin media's fup coming into play,
have a read of your t&c's.

they are one of the worst ISPs for fup, throttling, traffic management, etc.
