New teacher in year 6

My daughter is in year 5 at school, there is her class and another that is split with some year 5's and year 6 children together.
Next term, my daughter is the only girl moving over to the other class, along with a few boys. The new class will have a teacher that is new to the school.
A few parents have had meetings with the head today over this. Some are worried about the fact its a teacher new to the school (in year 6) and some dont see why now after all these years the year group is being split again.
I'm finding it hard to worry about anything lol, my daughter is fine about moving classes and said it was a chance to have a new teacher and make new friends (she knows the children already obviously but has never been in the same class as them)
Would it worry you? (sorry if this seems like a non problem, I just need another point of view)

If the ratio of teacher to pupil is as good as it sounds, I wouldn't worry about it at all. Would imagine the school will do as my dd's and encourage certain activities to be together e.g. music, art etc.0

when my daughter was in her old school, some of the parents caused uproar because they had year 3's and 4's in the same class...petitions were flying about and everything! I didn't get involved in any of that but there was one parent who was really smug because her daughter had made the purely year 4 class and she made me feel like cr*p!! I had my own appointment with the head - I wondered if she was picked because she wasn't doing so well but that wasn't the case!
She left that school (only because we moved house some 5 miles away)to a much smaller one and has been with mixed years the whole time she has been there..it hasn't done her any harm!
don't worry! If your daughter is fine with it, then she is happy!!

Tiff,
I really wouldn't worry. I imagine she will be with her current friends during break times - plus she'll probably have a great time meeting new friends.
Furthermore, in my experience teaching in primary school children love having a teacher new to the school!"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" (Douglas Adams)0 -
Well someone's got to have the new teacher - what's the problem?
These parents do realise that their children will be moving up to secondary school in a year's time, don't they? There will be LOTS of new teachers, in fact there will be new teachers for every subject.
I'd see it as a positive advantage!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I can't say I would have a problem with it. At my primary school pupils moved class groups virtually each year and I don't see the new teacher being a concern at all.
It might even be good for the future if your child ends up attending a high school like mine where each subject had its own seperate class-groups based on ability and a pupil would have to get used to numerous different teachers over the years, many of whom were new or substitutes. A pupil who is used to moving between groups and learning from different teachers may adapt better to such an environment.0 -
Well I wasnt worried about the split class thing, we've been used to that with my son throughout primary. I sometimes wonder if I am normal because I dont storm up to the school like some others lol My friend felt year 6 was an important year and they shouldnt be having a new teacher, her children also had a new teacher this year and he is now leaving. I've been told my daughter is very well placed for SATS so I dont think I have anything to worry about.
Sue, re moving to Secondary, my friend mentioned above has twins and will be insisting they stay together in class at Secondary and did not like the suggestion that she might not have any say over it, maybe its a control thing!“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
had to reply to last post, i have twins, and they go to different schools. i think its good for kids to have a change of class and teacher, it will prepare tehm for the secondary school, where most classes are taught by different subject teachersloves to knit and crochet for others0

I think you are normal, not sure about the other parents though ;-). I wouldnt cause a fuss either. Your daughter sounds very sensible, must take after you.

how refreshing! I really thought this was going to be another school-bashing thread. How crazy that some parents object to having a new teacher. Maybe, to avoid ever having a new teacher, everytime a member of staff leaves those children shoud be shared out across the other classes until there is only one giant class being taught by the caretaker!!!0

Just from a teacher's point of view, I know that heads usually demand more of a teacher who is going to be teaching a SATS year-group, so I'm sure the interviews etc would have been very vigorous. They usually only employ teachers who have had experience with teaching the SATS, so I'm sure your daughter's results will be ok. The new teacher may even have been brought in to improve the current SATS results due to having more experience.
I think that your daughter sounds very mature about the situation, and I wouldn't worry that you haven't been upset about it all.
Hope this helps in some small way.Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.I married Moon 8/4/2011, baby boy born 26/9/2012, Angel Baby Poppy born 8/11/15, Rainbow baby boy born 11/2/20170
