Yeah, I wouldn't do the east cost of the US in August - too expensive, too busy and the exchange rate isn't great at the moment. It can also get very humid at this time of year.

Actually, I hadn't noticed that the OP mentioned "next month". It's slap bang in the middle of the peak season so nowhere is going to be cheap. One of the big advantages of being a single traveller is being able to travel outside of the school holidays.

Everyone kept warning me about the humidity (July is supposed to be the worst), but it was not a problem for me at all. New York was v busy (but isn't it always), Philadelphia was not overly so, and Boston was quite lovely. Also, in terms of expense ... that is what MSE is for! ;)
    Gone ... or have I?

when I went to Turkey last year, I booked the cheapest flight I could get and separately, the accommodation on hotels4u. I got a nice basic s/c apartment for about £30 per week. When I searched for accommodation for 1 person there was no availability, but as soon as I changed it to 2 persons, there was miraculously quite a long list. But the price was per room, not per person, so I booked for 2 persons!

Totally agree with doshwaster that there are a lot of advantages to travelling alone, hope you find something suitable and have a good holiday.

Yes, I have found that too. Many places don't advertise rooms for 1 person - or if they do you get stuck in a tiny room with a single bed in the worst part of the hotel. When you book directly there usually aren't single person supplements so I just book a double room/apartment for myself.

I also usually book room only or self catering. You are on holiday to explore, not spend half of your time in the hotel eating the same food every day. I've never seen the attractions of all inclusive.

There's a big world out there to see. I have single friends who never go away alone as they think it is "sad" - well, it's not as sad as taking a week off work and spending it at home watching DVD boxsets like some do!

I do a lot of travelling in the USA, and love the fact you just book the room. They don't care if it's one or two people staying, you only start to pay more for guests above that number.

I book hotels as I go, so if anywhere looks dodgy it allows me to cancel (usually) up to 4pm on the day of check-in. Unfortunately you're slap bang in the middle of the UK school holidays, so all prices will be seriously inflated.

I think if you headed to Europe or further East, the self-catering option would work best, you can often get good package deals with those.

If you can't or don't want to delay your plans, as you don't have to confer with your a fellow traveller, I'd just keep an eye on all the last minute deals. If you see what you want you can be on your way the next day.

    Enjoy your trip!

Thank you all for your very enlightening replies and nice comments...last year I went to New York with my kids in August...it was 90 odd degrees but I thought it was superb :)

As I said I will be going on my own this year and have taken on board all the replies...I may even change it to September now as I haven't had time to organise it and it's August tomorrow!...

I like the greek island hopping idea Doshwaster....have you done that? and if so have you any recommendations?

    Thanks
