upgrading memory?

Hello
Our main computer is approx 4 years old and is only 254mb memory. It runs XP windows but I would like to upgrade the memory. I have read there are different types of memory. How would I find out from my computer which is the right type to get? And how much extra memory could I put in my computer?
Many thanks

  • https://www.crucial.com put your PC details in, or run their scanner. Another 256 would make a big difference to the performance of the PC, 512 or more if you want to splash out.

  • I'd see what difference the ram makes before considering further upgrades, sometimes it's nearly as cheap to buy a new PC if you are going to replace other bits.

World of Warcraft sucks memory to no end....

I upgraded from 512Mb to 1024MB when I was playing it and it still jumped around when ever I entered the alliance or horde main city.

I have a similar computer to you btw, with an AMD 2000+ XP.

You should notice the difference with a memory upgrade. Good luck!

There's an expansion pack coming out for this game at the end of this year, that'll probably demand even more from our PCs.

  • How easy is it to install? Is it something I could do with very little knowledge/experience of computers?

angel albertroos (above) helped me put memory in my laoptop and a dvd drive in my desktop, it is very simple, just basically slot it in the only thing you have to be a little worried about is static, so dont walk up and down your carpet with the memory out of the protective sleave and earth yourself before you put it in...

but albertoss is the man with the know ;)

    Very easy!
I printed off the instructions (very easy with BIG pictures from crucials web site did the grounding thing about a hundred times! unscrewed the computer, and clipped the memory card in, you have to push VERY hard! listen for the clips to snap into place and thats it!
Crucial web site took away all the trouble of what memory to buy as they scan your system.
    Very quick delivery too.
Would never had known about the website without the tip above!

The motherboard has an intergrated graphics adapter which shares it memory with the system memory and that why you see that you've lesser memory than the standard 256MB. After your new RAM installation, go to the BIOS setup and increase this allocation for the graphics adapter too and this will speed thing a little bit more. The best is to go for at least a 128MB AGP video card.. this will really speed up the game.
