THTC meter to Economy 7 in Scotland

Hi,
I am new to this forum. I have moved a flat in Scotland, which is all electric, no gas in the house. Scottish hydro controls the electricity in the house. I have electric storage heaters, electric heaters and electric boilers in the house.
I had the impression that I can save money by turning the storage heaters during the night time and turn it off during the day. But i found out from Scottish hydro that , i have THTC meter, so my low rates are during the period 3:30 am to 6:30 am, 11am to 1pm and 7:45 to 9:45pm. This means i will be charged at normal rates if I leave the heater running during the night. They told me u can switch to economy 7 meter to get a contact 7 hr low rate during the night.
I have read some where in this forum that THTC is better than economy 7. Is that true or should I change to Economy 7 . The property is handled by a property management, so i need them to call the Landlord, who inturn needs to call Scottish hydro to get the meter changed. So there is a lot of hassle in doing this.
Should I change to Economy & meter or not? Please give some suggestions.

It all depends on the setup, and how you use your heating. As its summertime now you will certainly be better off with Eco7 as the heating wont be being used much, come winter it may differ.
THTC has an expensive tariff compared to Eco7, and your pretty much stuck to being with Hydro, if you had Eco7 there will be a lot more choice regards suppliers and tariffs. I dont have the time to explain THTC at the mo, but if you trawl through some of my older posts you'll see how THTC works. If you no longer have the additional convecor/panel heaters that are normally found in these systems (or are happy to use them through the day at the higher rate) then Eco7 is probably the best bet.0 -
That's interesting. We have a holiday letting property that has THTC meters. It's on a business contract tariff, currently with SSE, but in the past it has been with npower. When getting quotes for electricity I have just said that the tariff was economy 7 as there wasn't an option to put in THTC and I've just paid the off peak rate for the THTC meter and the standard rate for the standard meter.
Have THTC with Hydro here. Actually I don't think their rates are too bad compared to some, but I might have a go at switching by calling the tariff eco 7 and see what happens. There's no fixed or capped rate available and I'd like to do that now...Point is though, that for some properties that aren't too warm and have all electric heating, THTC works much better as you get off peak heat during the day as well as at night. Storage heaters, even modern ones, just can't keep enough heat.0 -

I know nothing much of THTC in particular, I think it's called comfort plus with other suppliers, but basically its economy seven [ night only operation -night price rate ] with an available daytime rate cost boost, so its much more flexible.
- economy seven is night only operation -night price rate - for both heat & water
- THTC night and day operation with a different rate for both night and day - for both heat & water
However .. .. turning the storage radiators & water heating off during the night is not cheaper, in fact in the winter it will at least double the cost, the same for water heating, that is the point in the 24 hour cycle where you get the cheapest price for energy and the most opportunity to store that energy. turning it off during the day is cheaper, but you may not have enough [ see suggestion below ] daytime heat.
Speak to your supplier for your tariff information and remember that if you switch you may well be charged £50 to remove the ' other meter '. There are very few suppliers who support your tariff. If I was in your shoes I would buy a~n~other storage radiator and go to E7. I see [ hint ] hundreds per year of perfectly safe storage rads thrown away by council and housing association refurbs.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. If you have THTC, ALL of your space and water heating will be charge at off peak rate, regardless of whether it is in the day or in the night. As well as storage heaters, any panel heaters should also be on the off-peak rate if they are wired right. Turn off storage heaters if it is warm, or turn down the input to save money.1
