Help with iphone email please

Hi can someone help me please.
I have just entered the exciting new world of having an iphone, I have set up emails for Sky and for Yahoo.
I used to have a Nokia E71 which would beep to let you know if an email had arrived.
As far as I know I have set it all up correctly with the email notification alert on.
The only way I know if I have email is to actually go into mail and wait for it to connect and it then goes 'bing' is this right or am I missing something?

Have a look in Settings, Email, fetch new data and see if you have it set to check manually?0

yep, and underneath that you have:
Every 15 Minutes
Every 30 Minutes
Hourly
Manually
make sure you have selected Every 15 Minutes0 -

I have just sent myself an email that I know has arrived, does it mean I wont know about it on my phone for 15mins? because it hasn't beeped yet!!0

It will pick it up when it checks on its cycle. Not 100% sure how it works because some nights I can pick up and email on my phone thats connected to the wifi before my mac picks it up

It did beep eventually, I think I was spoiled with the instant Nokia email, thanks again0
