How should we store all of the DVD's?

Due to lack of space we are looking to rip all our dvd's and store them somehow.



I was thinking maybe when we get our new telly to use the USB socket at the back (it is a Samsung) to hookup some external drive.

My question is if we rip the DVD's, what output format is the best in terms of compromising between space and quality? (drive will probably be 2TB and we have about 400 DVD's to store).

Also is there any filmfile management application out there that can run from the drive over a TV? I mean something that contains a search facility more than anything else.

Trying to google this led me to unwanted corners of the net I am afraid.:rotfl:

I doubt for one minute that the TV is going to output what it sees via the USB socket, that will just be for input to the TV.
Even if it did work that way though, the TV isn't going to strip the Macrovision protection, nor the protection employed to stop you copying the disc in the first place.

DivX and Xvid are the most common, with H.264 being the preferred choice for HD content.
The final file size & quality will all depend on what settings you apply when encoding.

Plenty of hard drives out there with built in media players.

Google Xbox media servers there is a wealth of info on setting up a system, I have a shed load of dvds all ripped to a number of hard drives, and all the dvds are stored up in the loft, I can access the dvd menu via my tv remote and can select from the DVD covers.

Even my wife who is a technophobe finds it a doddle to use.
