Deciding on a router...

Hey guys,

I will soon be getting cable and i was just wondering which router you would recommend..

I would like the router to be able to cope with 6 computers using it and has to be wireless. I've got a shortlist of 3 routers and was wondering which you would recommend?

BELKIN £50.81
F5D7231UK4

WIRELESS 108Mbps ROUTER

LINKSYS £54.48
WRT54GSUK

WIRELESS 125MBPS ROUTER WITH SPEEDBOOSTER

OR

NETGEAR £55 (reduced from £80)
WGT624

WIRELESS 108MBPS ROUTER

I found all these on the following site (about halfway down the page) and once ive decided on which one then i'll have a look around for the same one but cheaper on other websites..

http://!!!!!!!.com/k26cj thats supposed to say !!!!!!!

or this http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1021231211.1157891588@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfhaddikkjkfhdcflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=ProductList&category_oid=-28361&fm=14&sm=1&tm=1&show_all=true

If you believe that none of these choices are correct then feel free to recommend any others!:)

Thanks for all your help in advance, it is really appreciated..

Once you get your wireless router look here for info on getting it set up and made secure
  • I prefer to buy d-link equipment, but that is because I am certified in cisco equipment (Cisco make linksys and d-link equipment and are the dogs balls in networking stuff), another thing to bear in mind is the likes of AOL and sky broadband offer free wireless routers (netgear router) that are similar to the netgear one you've listed.

one minute.. lets say i was to go with the linksys router for £54.48 (in above link) is that all the equipment i would need?

or would i need a seperate modem? i was under the impression that for cable a modem wasnt necessary?

and i still dont know which one to go for in that list..im willing to spend up to £60 and at the moment im leaning towards that linksys one..

thanks for all the comments above and the ones below:)

the linksys model you are going for has a modem built into it, so you just have to configure it to your cable or isp and you should be away.

just had a look on the pc world website and found this d-link router it will be better than the linksys one but is a bit slower but is better, could go into alot more detail but I won't.

    D-Link Router

scrap this one requires a modem seperate to the router.

  • When I had cable Internet access from Telewest they provided the 'modem' (if that's the right word here) and it had an RJ45 ethernet port which I connected to the similar port on my PC.

If your set up is the same you will just need a router (without the modem) which will be cheaper :) .

    D-Link Router

    Thanks for your reply,

The reason i looked at the linksys one was because it says its faster and i will be connecting 6 computers to it (5 wirelessly) therefore i thought maybe that it would be a better idea to get a faster one? Correct me if im wrong im just assuming here..

Also, if i'll be living in a house with 5 other people it could be the case that every week a different person will be going home, and taking their laptop with them. Therefore if the router is connected with one laptop will it mean that when they go home (and take their laptop) i'll have to connect the router to another laptop?

    thanks:)

tbh its not even been installed yet so im not sure so i'll have to see but because the cost is being spread 6 ways i think it will probably easier to spend a bit more and get an integrated modem..

The speed only has any effect if you wish to transfer files large between users on your network. As long as the router is left on and connected to your ISP, any of the five users can then connect to the net as and when required.
