Fragile phone line and moving suppliers

We moved into our house 3 years ago, and we've had problems with the BT line it seems that our exchange is a bit chaotic and tangled as whenever a change happens at the exchange we loose our line (4 times now) the first time was when we had Broadband installed we lost the line, then a neighboor moved in and same happened. The last time the engineer wanted to replace the connection as although it was now fixed apparently the line is too short and this is why we have the problems. However as the incoming socket is behind a radiator (don't ask - no idea) which we would have had to removed ourselves and I had just got home after having major surgery I told them no. I had then planned to get them to replace it next time it broke, that was 16 months ago.

So finally my question, if I move to another supplier rather than BT will they be able to repair/replace the line if it goes again? Would they charge? I don't want to move from BT to save money and then loose the line the next time someone moves something in the exchange.

Thnx

P

Of course they will - but the same engineers (Openreach) will be given the job.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
