Here we go again!

After a year of being unemployed (2009) my hubby got an IT contract which started Feb this year. It was a rolling contract, which finishes at the end of August. He is working for the public sector and of course as we all know there are going to be severe cut-backs. Does anyone know what the private sector is like for IT contracts?

IT contracting is always going to be like this; it is well paid though; your OH could seek a non contracting IT job which will probably pay less but be more secure (i.e an IT manager)

to be fair its also difficult to comment without knowing the field in IT. Saying i work in IT is like a Pilot and a bus driver both saying they work in Transport.

That said the other poster is right, the IT contacting field is always volatile but lucrative. If your flexible enough their is always work, maintain good contracts and their is still an element of "its not what you know".

I wouldnt actually be surprised to see Public Sector contracts increase, they have a habit of losing experienced and essential staff and then facing shortfalls in knowledge. They'll try to hide it from the public a lot of contractors are providing important jobs and these are going to go away. With the savings theyre looking to make i wouldnt also be surprised to see them turn more to consultancy.

we have many IT contractors. The poorer skilled ones that were once paid £20 p/h are now content being paid £12 and say jobs are scarce. The ones on £450-500 a day are now getting many more calls per week than any time over the last 2.5 years
