Horse transportation. 4x4?

  • The 130 miles i hope isn't a daily commute, presume you mean 260 miles a week total.

Don't try and use a car for towing a horse trailer a normal car will not stand it and as most are FWD will get stuck at the first sign of wet grass, and you want something able to control the trailer not have the tail wagging the dog.

A 4x4 capable enough for this will not be cheap to run unless you have a high budget and could afford one of the newer more fuel efficient 4x4's, so reckon on 30 mpg unladen for most Diesel vehicles in this range if you don't belt it.

You don't give a budget so i'll estimate funds are not great, you could do worse than find yourself one the dwindling number of Landruiser Colorado'swith the 3 litre TD, i used to use a Landcruiser for horses with the same engine and the thing would tow effortlessly and totally reliable.

Two other competent possibilities and you will get much newer as they don't have the correct badge, Hyundai Terracan and Kia Sorento, both excellent vehicles.

That's going to be a struggle.

How often and how far do you need to transport the horse?

On the most i'd imagine once a month for maybe 20 miles, although would not want to be restricted if I decided to go further a field.

Could get a good example of a 2003-2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7CRD for that money. I was recently looking at them (not for towing though). They are well equipped and comfortable inside and have a very good Mercedes Benz diesel that averages 29mpg (unladen). Not sure about what weight it could tow though.
