    It definitely is!

Check their charges (including their visa debit card fees for cash withdrawals) here: http://www.natwest.com/content/global_options/terms/Guide_Fees_Interest.pdf

When we recently got our holiday money from the Post Office the very helpful Clark alerted us that we'd be charged this fee. So she put through a normal cash withdraw (no fee) which we instantly exchanged for our currency. Very helpful and saved us the fee.

Ah I see, so buying foreign currency directly with your debit card... the banks class it the same as having made a purchase / withdrawal abroad which they charge for...

Very sneaky... OP I think if you complain about this they may refund as a goodwill gesture this time.

No it isn't treated as a purchase abroad. It's treated as a cash advance over the counter at somewhere other than a branch. (Which is what it is!)

OK peeps, heres the latest, I went into natwest and they were Adamant that it wasnt them who had charged the fee and that it was Thomson (which i tend to agree with as the transaction charge on my statment shows the money has gone to thomson not Natwest!) . So went into thomson (where i waited ages!) and they tried to blame Natwest. After i told them what Natwest said they didnt seem to know where it came from. One suggestion was that it could be Barclays who have charged as its them who provide the Chip and pin service, they took my number and are going to find out where this rougue charge has come from... no mention of refunds though...

Sounds like the Natwest peson you spoke to was untrained in this area. (And sent you on a wildgoosechase to Thomsons, instead of finding out for you poroperly)

Their ts + cs clearly show a 1.5% fee for cash withdrawals via the visa system over the counter using your debit card at anywhere other than one of their branches.

Quentin - You were right, the woman in Natwest didnt know what she was talking about. After a further call to Natwest they confirmed it was the 1.5% fee. thanks guys
