in Cutting tax
Hello all!
I'm hoping someone can help me out with an income tax query.
I was working full time up until the end of Feb this year. I then was looking for work (not claiming JSA) until I got a temporary position through a recruitment agency which started on 21 May. The temp position is ongoing and has no fixed term but it's expected to last around a month longer. For my first two pays (I get paid weekly) I did not get taxed at all but since then I've been taxed. I was under the impression that for the first £6000 or so of the tax year you don't get taxed - or is tax worked out on an assumption that you will be working for the full tax year?
So my question is should I be getting taxed, claiming a rebate is everything in order?
I hope that makes sense! :undecided
Thanks in advance.

if you finished work in february and didn't claim JSA then you may be due for a tax refund for the year 2009-10
do you have your P45 figures ..if you want to post them we can due whether you are due a refund otherwise contact the HMRC and ask (make sure you keep a copy of the P45 )
for this year the way you are taxed depends upon your tax code.... it should be 647L (without any other lentters afterwards) ...what is it? check you payslips0 -
Your personal allowance is split across the tax year. The reason you didn't get taxed initially was because you started work part way through the tax year and hadn't used any of the portion assigned to you from beginning of April. Now you have caught up and will continue to pay tax during the rest of the time you are in your temp job. If you have another break before you get your next temp or perm job the same should happen again.
As Clapton has advised, if you are out of work for any time during a tax year then you are probably due a rebate due to not using up your personal allowance during that time. Always worth checking your P60 or your P45's at the end of the tax year to see if you have overpaid.0
