New Bank Account when in Debt?

A friend of mine has got problems ! In a nutshell....
He has a current joint account with Halifax. His wife said she wants to divorce him. He can't get a single account with Halifax because he has a bad credit rating. Once she starts proceedings then the account will likely be frozen so my question on his behalf is this:
Is there any place that is likely to open him an account so that he can have his wage paid into it?

Try Natwest they offer the step account for people with poor credit.

No overdraft and may only get a cash card or solo.
