Diced turkey thigh meat

Well did my OS shopping for the month last night (and it came in about half the price of my normal monthly shop!!!:eek:)

One of the things I did was buy different cuts of meat - normally it would be chicken breasts, this time I bought lots of diced turkey thigh

I'm planning on digging the slow cooker out - but does anyone have any particular tips/recipes for dealing with this? I am assuming it's going to take a lot longer and slower cooking - but I also figured it might be much tastier in the long run

Thanks guys xx

  • I would curry it - fry an onion till golden, add some sliced mushrooms and soften those and stir in the diced turkey. Stir in curry paste (or powder ) to taste and fry for 2 mins. Add a tin of tomatoes and a mug of chicken stock and simmer with the lid off for about 30 - 45 mins. Cover if it gets too dry. Just before you serve stir in about 5-6 tbsp natural yoghurt ( or a small pot)

Make a turkey tagine - it's a moroccon style dish and you could serve it with couscous.

Season the meat with flour, salt and pepper, the fry it (in a large pan) to sear the meat on all sides. Put some spices in such as cumin, coriander etc, add sliced carrots and a chopped onion and fry for about three minutes. Add 1/2 pint of chicken stock - stirring all the time. Bring to the boil and add about 3oz of chopped dried apricots and a tin of tomatoes or some chopped fresh tomatoes. Then put the whole thing into the slow cooker and cook for about two hours. Then add a tin of chick peas and cook for a further one to three hours. (you can bung the chickpeas in at the same time as all the other stuff if you're going out, it doesn't make that much difference)
    Yummy.

BTW- well done on the reduced shopping bill! :T

  • i use turkey thigh a lot for things like curry, stir fry, sometimes even casserole and i don't tend to bother lengthening the cooking times and it's always been yummy. never tough.

Cant believe I've been a member of old style for a couple of years yet only bought turkey thighs for the first time today. I usually use a whole chicken then make something with the cooked meat, or I use chicken breasts.

  • delicious Mediterranean dish, fry garlic, onion, chopped chorizo, add turkey meat, some oregano and thyme, a little paprika. combine white wine, sieved tomatoes and chicken stock, season with black pepper. i also add any white bean (cannelini, butter-free choice) and you can bulk up with any other veg like mushroom aubergine, courgettes-whatever stews nice. you can also add in small pasta at the end-flavours are superb, this can go in the slow cooker or oven. superb.

I use it in thai style curries instead of chicken or beef. Has a bit more taste and goes really well, plus its cheaper!
