Why tell the taxman you've got married....

    ............ for a variety of reasons! They even accept Email for (most of) it.
    If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • I'm not on benefits. I'm taxed via PAYE so they have all my details from my employer. Other than the name change (and not everyone bothers with that either - given how difficult AND costly I am discovering it is), I still cannot find a reason for telling them.

    That's not the case. For example your employer will not tell them / nor is responsible for telling them about a change of your address. So a P2 (Coding Notice) could well go to an old address. If you don't have a Royal Mail redirect on it ....... it's a prime piece of paper for opening Bank accounts in your name.

  • There's no married couples allowance at the moment, true. But we do now have the Tories in power, and given that they're fans of "traditional family values" and social engineering through taxation, it may well re-appear in future. HMRC would probably like marriage details to be on the record so they could add any such allowances automatically to avoid several million people claiming at once if and when they're introduced,
