Cat still feeding 14 week old kittens!

Options
As the thread states, mum is still feeding her kittens once or twice a day. She has been spayed so we thought she would stop producing milk but she is still happy to feed them.

They are all on solid food (biscuits, mince, chicken, fish, pouch/foil food etc) but are happy to snuggle up to be fed.

They are learning to hunt and are very healthy and in excellent condition - so is the mum - anyone else had this?

We are not unduly concerned because we are keeping all of the kittens anway, but it just looks a bit odd!

She may not even be producing milk anymore it could just be a comfort thing for them like a baby with a dummy.
Could you try and keep them apart for a while during the day just to break the habit?

Well done on getting her spayed though (sorry that sound's patronising but you know what I mean:o)

Please believe me when I say I'm not trying to make light of your post, but it did make me laugh (Thanks for that as I had just been reading a harrowing account of a vet's malpractice)

It just brought to mind a picture of mothers who carry on breastfeeding their children for far too long, sometimes almost to school age and I imagined mum cat in a few years time out hunting with her fully adult kits and them all stopping so kits can have a picnic courtesy of mum :rotfl:

My sister's Cavalier Spaniel brought up two orphaned kittens (via a false pregnancy) and two years later they still try to latch on....

Mum will push them away when she's fed up with them.

Glad I brightened up your day! Strangely enough when they are out in the garden if she stops and lays down they all think it's feed time! I'm sure she will get fed up in time - she certainly lays down the law about misbehaving - but I just thought it was a bit odd!
