My personal address book is becoming unwieldly. Is there a way to create more address books or subsidiary address books within in it for say family and church? I want to be able to send messages to individuals within any subsidiary book rahter than to the whole group.

Open the address book and from the menus choose File > New address book.
This will work fine if you select addresses from an address book. If you rely on the autocomplete facility (i.e. you start typing name or email address and thunderbird finds the ones that match for you) then this won't help since it combines all address books for this.
Of course you may find that if you have not been using the latter, by taking advantage of that facility negates the need to maintain separate addressbooks, unless you need to be able to copy individual address books from one machine to another etc.0
