non refundable flights

my mum and her hubby booked tickets to go see his grandchild in australia on there credit card as he had not seen his daughter in 5 years and had never seen her child.
The flights were non refundable then a few weeks later they found out he has cancer and the doctors told them he can not fly.
They first tried the company they got them from thinking this is a really good reason they have said it is turminal but they are trying loads of things and nothing is 100% so even putting the date till next year would be better than paying a card off with nothing to show for it.
They asked for info to prove that he was ill and then said no.
They then tried the credit card company again asked for the info sent it and they then told my mum they couldnt help and to go back to the company they got the tickets from.
my mum is now trying the holiday insurance they have with there bank, they have sent all the info they have been asked for and are just waiting.
this is making my mums life hell she is off work herself as she has been ill for the last year and now with her hubby not able to work they are struggling.
Is there another rute i am missing here to try and get this sorted so there not paying for a holiday they will never have any help would be really good sorry its so long and sorry if the spelling is bad thanks alex

It would have to be travel insurance. There's no legal requirement for the travel agent to refund the flights (unless, I believe, they were mis-sold - but not the case here).Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Alex ...
Does you Mum have a doctors letter saying husband not fit to fly & is he covered by bank insurance ... if so should be no probs claiming it back on insurance - that is where I would have gone to 1st .... if not, then I suspect he will lose money - although thinking about it, if both booked, then should at least be able to get back her flight costs.

Hi,
I am saying that if she is the one insured (& assuming that he is not), then she should be able to get her part of the flight refunded ... she is his wife, so as they were travelling as partners that should be fine.
If both are insured, then the insurance should pay out for both.
That is why you have insurance ....

dmg24 ... basically I am saying that if they are both going on this flight, as one booking, & she is the only insured, then she should get a refund, as she can not travel.
