VENT - Bank charges for paying in CASH

Just a vent really as it is sorted out now, but I am still cross

Just doing my accounts today for our business. I noticed that there were bank charges of £13.54 for 'paying in cash'.

As I NEVER pay cash into our business account I rang the bank, only to be told that an amount of over £600 had been paid in during May.

A quick look showed me which customer it was against, but I remembered speaking to the customer and she had agreed to do a BACS transfer. It was an old lady and she obviously for some reason decided to pay cash into my account instead.

After a good half an hour on the phone to the bank I managed to persuade them to refund the charges - I actually had no idea someone else could go in and pay cash into your account - it wouldnt have crossed my mind!

Rant over!

Glad they sorted it out however I would be unhappy about using a bank that charge you for daring to pay in cash!

I used to be a legal cashier (admittedly 5 years ago) and we were with Lloyds who didn't charge this then for either the office or the client account. I used to check the invoices so should have seen it.

Deposit/withdrawal charges are pretty standard on business accounts now i thought?

Least we pay them at my company.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Different banks have different accounts. I could go for an account which charges less or 0 on cash deposits and perhaps more on checques or BACS but I never deposit cash so that wouldnt make sense.

We continue to use a Building Society for all cash and cheque inputs as they do not charge, but use a bank for the C/C payments (have not found any way round this). Pay all bills from BS and just one cheque from bank to BS when funds are needed.

  • We've just started to pay cash into Barclays because we have started to sell through exhibitions. I paid in £2500 two weeks ago and today have received a statement saying we have been charged £21. That's £21 for about 5 minutes work.
I asked my business manager to call me and she explained that those are the charges and she can't refund them. Smug as every bank manager seems to be and didn't care in the slightest that we are going to close our account.
How do they have the bare-faced cheek to charge 0.85p for every £100 paid in. It is daylight robbery.
Anyway wants to do something to get back at banks about these charges I'm in.
