Right to information on ID theft

Hi,

I recently had a call from my bank to inform me that the police had contacted them after finding my card details in a terminal, can't remember if they said stolen terminal or hacked terminal, either way something dodgy had happened.

They have told me they have to cancel my card and issue me with a new one, so that is good.

However when I asked which merchant they recovered this information from, they said they could not tell me.

Now, am I in any way entitled to know WHO stole my information?

It would seem prudent to at least be aware that this merchant is now "high risk" or at least, higher risk. Now I understand that it may not be the merchants fault but their internal processes and checks have allowed this to take place, it is a security breach.

Is there any way I can ask my bank to inform me of the full details of this case?

I used the card at a limited number of places and now they are all going to suffer as I no longer feel confident to use any of them. Some will loose a sizeable chunk of money every month that I am sure they would rather have in their till but I no longer wish to use any of them.

That may seem over protective but that is MY choice.

So is the customer / victim entitled to any information or not?

No. I suspect the data protection act will apply.

I had something similar happen with a HBOS account. Card was used in England in person. They wouldnt tell me where it was used or what it was used for.

Apparently the person who was fraudulently using MY details has privacy rights =/

I found it (and still do) incredible that they were my details, my money etc yet they wouldnt disclose this information to me. Although i'm quite suprised the bank never picked up on it as previously i had only ever used the card to pay sums £50 or under. This was for over £500.

Thankfully, as far as I am aware, no money had been taken they got to the compromised machine before they could use it.

    Still unsettles you though.

First time this has happened to me, thankfully.

Mine was quite strange in that it was a one off. I caught it when the amount was pending. There had been nothing before and there hasnt been anything since (touch wood) although i have since went back to Lloyds TSB who have always been helpful.

Like they recently made a mistake on one of my accounts, someone called me back the next morning and said they'll take care of any costs incurred due to this and apologized. I was expecting them to try and pin the blame on me as HBOS would have done! So well done Lloyds:D

sorry for jumping in OP but i suffered a similar thing last week, saw an un-authorised transaction with Royal Mail on my Credit Card statement for £24.09 phoned and quieried it and was for (apparently) a redirection of my mail to a 'withheld' address (why they wouldnt tell me, when i supposedly requested it to be redirected to makes me so angry). Funny how it was processed the day after i was approved 2 new credit cards (I am juggling 0% balance transfers) with Barclaycard and Virgin, and got good credit limits on both.........

I'd love to find out where my credit cards were supposedly going to.... is there no way at all i can?
