Hello all.
Daughter (and granddaughter) are moving into her first house and she is thinking of ways to save money on TV, broadband and phone. I know there are some good packages about but the cheaper ones don't seem to be available in our semi rural area. Certainly no cable.
She is happy to use freesat (freeview isn't around here) and would just use her mobile as she doesn't make a lot of calls, but can she get broadband on an iMac without a landline, and would it be cheaper than signing up to a land line plus phone.
Someone will know!

You need a landline with a dial tone for the router/modem to recieve broadband signals, Regardless if its a mac/linux/windows you still need a landline dial tone and paying line rental.0

Options for broadband are...
Cable
3G
ADSL
Satellite
You can't get cable, 3G is low usage cap and probably won't work in the sticks, satellite is expensive. That leaves ADSL for which a phone line is needed.0 -
"Three" mobile broadband works well. If she is in an area with high speed coverage she might find that, like my parents, its as fast as landline based broadband. My parents live in the middle of nowhere and can only get 2MBit ADSL. They can get a good HDSPA signal from "3" and when I carried out side by side speed tests, download speeds were the same. Only problem is mobile broadband is no good for time critical online gaming such as shooter types.0

They may want to look into a "MiFi" it's a way of connecting most wireless devices to a "3G" connection.
it's starts from £49.99 for a pay-as-you-go & £39.99 for £15 pay monthly rolling contract (including 5Gb of data a month.)

MiFi is the size of a mobile phone and is basically a USB 3G dongle and a Wireless access point in a single package, so any device that has a wireless card can connect to the MiFi and use the 3G connection.Laters

You need a phone line, you don't need to be paying for a PSTN renal. So called 'naked DSL' is just the broadband service, however no provider in the UK offers such as pricing plan as Ofcom is still dithering.0 -
The only thing i can think of is if the main person in the house is receiving benefits, then they may be eligible for their "BTBasic" Account.
It's basically 1/3 the price of normal rental but there's a catch; if you use more than £4.50 of calls every 3 months! prices per call jumps up to 10p connection then 3p per min afterwards.

With these packages you pay the price for a phone line without having one...
You pay £30 for a 20MBit/s unlimited connection. I'm with Be* and pay £17.88 for a 24MBit/s unlimited connection. Add the price for a landline and I pay the same £30. So you're not really saving anything...0
