Outdoor security light

I need to get a security light for my garden. Has anyone got any advice on which one to go for? We've got a 120ft garden that backs onto an alley-way and people could easily get into our garden through one of my neighbours gardens so I'm guessing one with a wide angle would be worthwhile but can anyone recommend a particular one?

I was hoping to get a solar powered one to save all the obvious wiring difficulties but I'm guessing you wouldn't be able to turn it off so I'm assuming that would probably be a pain if it keeps lighting up when you'd prefer it to be turned off?? (i.e if you're sitting in the garden and would prefer to be in the dark)

  • We bought the cheapest of the cheap from Argos, I think it was about 10 quid at the time and bought it to replace the one already there. It is the security light with the movement sensor which picks up about 10-15m of our garden which is 25m long at its longest. We are considering putting leccy into our brick shed and if we do we will get another cheapy light which lights up the bottom end of the garden and also the alley out the back if we need it to.
I suppose the only way to find out is do a little research and see what you can come up with. We certainly have never had any probs with ours

  • Just a word of warning about a wide sensor area ... it could drive you potty if the light keeps going on, every time someone innocently passes by.

To be honest, you only want to pick up those actually approaching the property ... and not everyone in the local area!

I have 3 security lights, bought for less than £10 each. (At Wickes I think) All powered from the mains. They light my way round to the back of the house from the garage. I can adjust the angle of the light and the sensor and the sensitivity of the sensor and amount of time the light stays on.

They are 150watt bulbs because I found that a 500watt lamp that I had before was much too bright... it lit up half of the street.

I would strongly recommend that you get your electrics sorted out properly and not rely on solar powered one which I have no doubt will be a lot more expensive and nothing like as reliable. The chances are that you will have the lights for years to come and doing it properly will be good value for money.

  • Does any one know where i can buy a low wattage exterior lamp, but one that switches to a higher output when motion is detected?

Thought this might be a good idea for a lamp next to the front door, so that it could remain on all night, whilst not using to much energy.

    Thanks for any advise.
