  • One thing I've found with these bulbs is the cheaper ones have poor light output. I've tried ones from the pound shop (2 for £1), asda smartprice ones & osram ones (£1.79 ea IIRC) from home bargains. The osram ones were far superier, much brighter.

You'll get plenty of light output from the cheap ones when they burst into flame and burn your house down!

You may get a slight pop but thats all.

So you are THAT sure that these lamps are internally fused?
  • I had one explode! Bits of glass melted into the carpet therefore I assume that they get very hot.

All the lamps that are supplied with the lightfitting seemed to fail very quickly and I don't remember if this was a blub that was a replacement or not.

Have just installed 2 of the Tesco ones alongside Homebase ones and there is no difference in the light output.
  • Having just installed 51 GU10 fittings in a new conversion, thought I could offer a couple of pointers to this thread:
    - 12v Halogens the heat goes straight up into the ceiling above, or ignites any combustable material if you have not fitted fire hoods
    - GU10s the heat and light is reflected down
    - I have installed electric dimmers (they dont buzz and can handle high load) in all 7 rooms to modulate the electric bill!
    - LED GU10s are good for background lighting or outdoor use on walkways, but they cannot be dimmed
    - People are saying different light from different GU10s. It's possible, particularly when there are three of 4 angles types from 25 - 50 degrees, smaller number gives smaller spot, 50 degree is better for lounge.
  • Bought these when originally posted. put 10 straight up to multiple outages. Today 3 of the 10 have gone (in different rooms). Just eeping you all updated!

I have to say I am amazed that people have been buying halogen bulbs that failed quality check! Not all bulbs are the same - just like the prices. In the past I have bought screwfix bulbs and they were all of VERY different qualities. Since I bought Sylvania bulbs I haven't looked back. Cheapest today is not cheapest in the long run. I have no connection with these people but I recommend:

Hang on, all the original advert said was "failed our quality control as some very failing prematurely" this does not mean that they aren't BS\EU approved but within this batch they ordered some failed prematurely as comicmankevhas found. Thus these are not going to burst into flames.
