New Kitchen using Sideboards?

I live in an 200 year cottage and need a new kitchen. We really fancy getting a solid oak free-standing kitchen as we feel it is in keeping with the character. However after doing our research it is clear we are looking about £700-£1,800+ per free-standing unit (excluding the granite).
So I had an idea of using normal free-standing furniture like sideboards to make our own kitchen then place granite on top. You can buy cheap solid oak sideboards from places like oakfurnitureland (naming one) that import them pre-built in containers for £300-£700 per free-standing unit.
Has anyone actually built a kitchen this way or can provide any opinion whether it would work?
I'm guessing due to the over-hang of the side board top I will need to make plinths where two sideboards join.
Or would it be easy to take the tops off the sideboard so they meet flush.
Thanks for you help

Just bumping my earlier post
Also, just had a b&q quote back for kitchen with solid oak doors supply only. Came in at £3k
I can pontentilly build the same number of units using solid oak sideboards for less. Surely someone else has had this idea? Your left with a much better solid oak kitchen for less0
